ABOUT PETE

Pete Elman is a writer, musician and teacher with a passion for sports, rock and roll, and history. Originally from Washington, DC, Pete has lived in Oakland, California since 1985.

WRITER

Pete was the columnist for the Oakland Athletics Fan Coalition from 2000-2005 and covered local prep and college sports for the Contra Costa Times from 2000-2011. He has worked since 2014 as a freelance sportswriter for the Ultimate Sports Guide.

In 2013, along with Michael DeWall, he published an acclaimed children’s picture book and CD, Seasons, Rhymes in Time.

In 2023, Pete published two books: Remember Their Sacrifice, the story of unsung minority athletes who overcame the odds to achieve greatness, both off and on the field; and Insights and Outtakes, a collection of 49 of his articles on sports and culture written for the Ultimate Sports Guide.

MUSICIAN

Pete has been a professional musician since 1963, working as a performer, composer, studio musician, recording artist and producer of 35 albums. He released four acclaimed instrumental albums in the 1990’s which received extensive airplay and sold over 100,000 copies.

He has performed and recorded with, among others, country star Lacy J. Dalton, Peaches and Herb, Roy Buchanan, Nils Lofgren, Grammy-winning writer/producer Rick Nowels, Marty Balin, (Jefferson Airplane), Tom Johnston (Doobie Brothers) and Stef Burns (Huey Lewis and the News).

He has also composed, arranged, produced and performed on music for national TV (Larry King, PBS Frontline, Dateline) and radio ad spots (Eddie Bauer, Toyota and Levis).

TEACHER

Pete is currently teaching 14 different adult classes on the history, role and importance of contemporary popular music at universities and other venues in the Bay Area.

He previously taught English, History, Special Education and PE at private and public school at levels K-12 from 2002-2015.

In 1991 Pete created the nickname “Run TMC” for the legendary Golden State Warriors trio of Hall of Famers Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin.
